A General Interest Lobby

Present and active in Brussels, first as parliamentary assistant to Philippe Herzog, then with its own Office in Brussels, Confrontations Europe acts as a mediator between its network of citizens and key players and EU institutions: as a civil society association, it also works to alert its partners when appropriate and to lobby EU institutions.

It works on redressing the French influence in Europe through its involvement in European projects of general interest, collaborating with the Conseil d’Analyse et de Prévision (Analyses and Forecasting Council) for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of European Affairs as well as with the permanent Representative of France to the EU. It promotes involvement between its members and other European networks and organises meetings throughout Europe. The association has travelled to Germany, Hungary, Poland and Bosnia- Herzegovina. In 2006/2007 it is a European Tour, organising conferences in Brussels, Berlin, Budapest, London, Warsaw, Madrid and Prague.

A civil society association

To inform and raise awareness of European issues
- Its publications combine reflections and actions, analyses, and a range of options, initiatives and testimonials.
- Its website is going to be revamped to make it more interactive.

To promote the participation of citizens and key players in priority projects like the revision of the Lisbon Strategy, the reform of the social model or the creation of a Union policy…

To create spaces for public debates. Over 3000 people a year attend and take part in its symposiums, conferences and seminars that tackle all the major issues:
- The future of the European Constitution.
- The industrial challenge in Europe.
- The service economy.
- The financial markets agenda.
- Social cohesion and the rights of minorities.
- Free movement for all.
- The ethic of responsibility and solidarity.
- The issues involved in the new enlargement of Europe.

To take part in meetings organised by other players in business organisations and regions in France and Europe.

A new kind of lobby

- Puts forward proposals in EU institutions. Its intervention and actions – through dialogue with members of the European Parliament and the European Commission – feed the European debate and seek to develop positive compromise strategies on concrete issues on the Community agenda.

- Takes part in the decision-making process. Its role in the pre-decision making process aims to influence proposals for regulations and directives made by the European Commission. Its conferences concerning new industrial policies and services also contribute to the development of proposals by the Commission.

- Influences political decisions. A measure concerning services of general interest (SGIs), developed in synergy with a number of European players, has opened the way to a constructive European law. The positions adopted by the association regarding the Services directive or the financial services action plan have helped the members of Parliament to decide to act.
