The test of public consent
The announcement of a referendum in Greece has put on hold the deal agreed by European leaders on 27 October. Although the timing is deemed inappropriate, the Greek people’s right to have their say on the decisions reached cannot be contested. The Treaties did not provide for a federal budgetary and fiscal authority in the Eurozone, so the legitimation process still falls within the scope of national sovereignty. In Germany, all projects are scrutinised by the Constitutional Court and all measures must be approved by the Bundestag.

The economic issues of a shared nuclear safety in Europe

Moving thanks from Jovan Divjak, free after 5 months of unfair detention in Austria
Dear, respected friends, I feel the need to thank you for the selfless moral and tangible support to endure the psychological torture I was submitted to during the last five months, since I was unjustly retained in Austria, at the request for extradition to Serbia by Serbian Prosecutor's Office.

Jovan Divjak is free. He is now back in Sarajevo, exonerate and head held high.
All the European democrats are delighted at this decision of the Austrian Justice. As you all know, Confrontations Europe has lead a fight, along with European democrats with different political views, to require Jovan Divjak's release.  After the arrests of Ratko Mladic on May 26th and of Goran Hadzic on July 21st, there is an urgent need to release Jovan Divjak and not to allow any confusion with the war criminals.

SMA: THE FIGHT GOES ON

WHAT IS EUROPE'S STRATEGY FOR GROWTH?
Extract of Confrontations Europe, La Revue n°93. Document coordinated by Marie-France Baud. The European Commission published several communications at the end of October 2010, virtually all at the same time. They address some very important subjects, but are not at all easy for the ordinary citizen to understand! The wide variety of legislation, regulations and measures proposed do not stem from a common political strategy, which might have placed them in a more understandable light.

Several companies and stakeholders were actively involved in this innovative event, which painted a broad picture of the current situation in Europe and across the world, and of ongoing low-carbon vehicle projects. One thing is evident: the clean car represents not only a technological revolution, but also a social challenge.

2008-03: NUCLEAR POWER AT THE HEART OF THE DEBATE on 27-28 March in Paris
The nuclear revival is a reality worldwide. France and other European countries have major industrial advantages with respect to this technology but “the European political clock is running slow, and this is a major handicap. A political-strategic approach needs to be initiated." This message from Anne Lauvergeon, CEO of AREVA, provides a good illustration of the general tone of the European symposium, organised by Confrontations Europe in collaboration with CERES and the Entretiens européens in Paris on 27 and 28 March, 2008.

2008-02-12: THE KEY ISSUE FOR SOLVENCY II ONE YEAR AHEAD OF ITS ADOPTION
Today, the insurance industry must rise to a dual challenge: risks are increasingly numerous and complex, and social demand for coverage of risks is continuing to grow. At the same time, new risk management and analysis techniques and the financial innovations developed over the last few years have made the current prudential supervision system for European insurance obsolete. The new prudential framework proposed by the European Commission in July last year in the proposed Solvency II Directive must guarantee the safety of European consumers, while strengthening the competitiveness of the European insurance industry.

2008-02-06: OPEN LETTER TO MEP ON THE GAS PACKAGE IN ITS FIRST READING
The 3rd Gas Package is a continuation of its predecessors. It aims to increase competition in national markets by measures relating to ownership unbundling (o.u.), i.e. the de-integration of traditional operators. It is innovative in that it proposes cooperative investment tools, as well as the regulation and management of interconnections. It creates governance to oversee developments in the gas system, based mainly on committee procedures. We should ask ourselves whether these choices are relevant given the fundamental problems facing the Member States in the European Union viz. security of supply and the double imperative of development and solidarity. With regard to these challenges, we believe that amendments and in-depth improvements to the Gas Package proposed by the Commission are essential.

2007: A new type of lobby
Brussels has become the focal point for the construction of Europe . A lot happens there. They are becoming increasingly influential; indeed, their influence is sometimes crucial.
