The economic issues of a shared nuclear safety in Europe

There is a great deal at stake viz. the life extension of power plants (estimated to cost 40 billion € in France), decommissioning (a subject not currently being discussed in public debate), the building of new power plants (the building of a newgeneration EPR costs 4 to 5 billion €) and waste management. How should these costs be shared? What type of cooperation should be established within Europe? There are several challenges ahead e.g. providing energy for Germany and Italy in the future by building interconnections, and bringing plants up to new standards (including the 19 Russian-built power plants in Eastern Europe out of the 148 in the EU). We will no doubt require longterm investments. We must also enable Lithuania to obtain a power supply or build its own power station. How can we strengthen cooperation between Europe and Russia? EDF and Rosatom are already working together in Turkey. Is it feasible to envisage cooperation in Europe to develop the nuclear industry and make it safer?
