Supervised by Michel Cruciani, André Ferron and Hervé Fischer, the focus of this working group is on the energy policy of the European Union: criterions for investment, market frameworks, price formation…

Area of the energy strategy, both fossil fuel based and nuclear, played an important role in the process of creation of the European Union in 1957. However, at the time of the 1970s oil crisis, the energy policy remained the preserve of nation states. In the 1980s, during the period of rapidly increasing oil prices, European Union embarked on the mission to develop a coherent common energy policy.

20 years later this mission is still not complete, but Europe learnt its lesson. It must employ the common energy policy not only for its competitiveness and security, but also in the interest of the planet. The debate regarding energy strategy reopened on a big scale in 2006, when European Commission issued the Green Paper on the “European Strategy for Sustainable, Competitive and Secure Energy” and a package for the common energy policy. Confrontations Europe would like to participate in and contribute to this debate.
